4DIMENSION.APP / About the experiment
A video turned into space
4D represents a video as a volume: every frame occupies a position on the time axis. X and Y retain the image's spatial dimensions; depth represents time. This is an artistic spacetime visualization, not a physical simulation of a fourth spatial dimension.
How it works
Upload a video and explore its full duration in the timeline. Drag the edges to select up to 30 seconds or move the entire selection. Press Process selection to update the 3D volume. Cube, Stack and Echo share separate opacity controls for the selected frame and all other frames.
After a 3–2–1 countdown, rotate and zoom for 30 or 40 seconds while time moves through the clip. Your camera movements, including auto orbit, are recorded. A progress line above the preview shows recording and then download preparation. You can keep exploring during preparation; those later movements do not change the recording. The file includes 4dimension.app and, with the signature enabled, the logo and contract.
Inspiration
This project explores ways to visualize time as space, drawing on visual references. It is an independent implementation.
The reference screenshots are preserved in references/ in the repository.
Privacy and limitations
Processing runs locally using Angular, Three.js, Canvas and browser media APIs. Videos and frames are never uploaded to a server. Exports use WebCodecs and include no audio. Match source keeps constant source FPS, including rates above 60; other choices cannot exceed the source rate. Variable-FPS sources export at their average rate. When source FPS cannot be read, video export is unavailable and PNG remains available.
